Description

The TELEFUNKEN ECC83-TK is a well-balanced tube suited for all types of music and playing styles. Designed to allow for cleaner headroom than higher gain 12AX7s when pushed into overdrive, it offers distortion with strongly defined lows, a rich mid range and clean, smooth highs.

Developed by RCA and released in September of 1947, the ECC83-TK (12AX7) is a high gain / low noise tube that is the most popular tube used in input / inter-stage audio amplifiers. The dual triode design makes the ECC83-TK (12AX7) compact, relatively inexpensive, and produces a high quality full frequency response.

12AX7's are known for their rich even order harmonic distortion when driven into overdrive. Even order harmonics fit into the western musical scale and are more pleasing to the ear than the harsh odd order harmonic distortion created by transistors. The (ECC83-TK) 12AX7 is also known as the ECC83, which was the European designation found on tubes from Phillips / Mullard.

Perfect For Universal Audio 710 Twin Finity

Posted by Faith Over Fear Music, LLC on March 26, 2022

I reached out to Lunch Box Audio and spoke with Rich! He was very helpful! I was able to get the desired tube with 3 day shipping! They came in perfect condition and was a perfect match for the 710 Twin Finity. Having just bought the Twin Finity it came with the factory JJ Tube 12AX7. It sounded really good very clean and musical. The noise floor of the tube wasn’t too bad at all, however on the Twin Finity I noticed a slight noise floor when the gain goes pass 3 1/2. After testing the factory tube, I switched it out for the Telefunken tube, let it warm up and upon testing it I noticed a significant decrease in noise floor. The tube is cleaner and more musical throughout the entire frequency spectrum. The warmer it got the more musical it became, the bottom end was more pronounced and fluffy and the remaining frequency spectrum was silky and smooth, also it’s very transparent sounding. This Telefunken tube is a joy when mixing also! My current chain is a Neumann TLM 103 - Universal Audio 710 Twin Finity (w/Telefunken Tube) - Audient ID14 MKII. My goal is to get a new interface, my choices are between Universal Audio Twin X6 or Prism Lyra 2! Either or I’ve noticed and major difference in sound when recording vocals. I chose to write an extensive post because I don’t see many post about switching tubes from the factory JJ Tube to the Telefunken tube in the 710 Twin Finity! Hopefully this review will be helpful to someone looking for the same thing I was! Blessings to all who read this post!

I am very happy with this. I get a new sound when I push the input harder. For some reason headroom is better.
