    coles 4038 stereo bar

ok. I wanted a mobile, repeatable blumlein setup in a small room with limited space for stands. This absolutely does the job. Not at all cheap for a single (ok, double*) use accessory, but if you have a pair of coles 4038s that you want to setup securely and reliably in blumlein (*or narrow spaced pair) this may be just the thing.

As these are a coles oem accessory, they are a little old school, like everything about these almost 60 year old mics. The thumb screw for securing the notched center mount pivot is hilariously small and difficult to tighten properly. I think the intention was to prevent over tightening.. but it's a little too fiddly for me. The protruding end screw used for spaced mounting can also get in the way of a host straight stand in its most compact position, a little, a minor gripe. I'd also prefer a more modern mechanism than the two thumbscrews used to secure the mics to the mounts.

That said, the mounting bar, the mounts themselves and the way(s) they all fit together clearly demonstrates a very high quality of design, materials and workmanship, despite being a little old school in design.

.. but none of that really matters once you put your 4038's up in front of your drum kit. Way WAY better than managing two stands, or even two booms off one stand. Perfect blumlein configuration that is easily movable without having to realign. 9/10. I consider this, or something equally functional.

AEA makes the SMT-1 that seems to do the same thing, but I have not used it. It might be possible to attach a quick release to the required 4038SA adapter, which might be an advantage, but they are attached to both the bar and the mics with sets of two alan screws each, which seems significantly more cumbersome than the thumbscrews securing the Coles mounts to the bar, and even the smaller less friendly thumbscrews securing the mic to the mount.

As I said I considered this an essential accessory for my setup. If you have similar needs, this should do the job.

As for the seller, lunchbox audio was fast and responsive and price competitive in a low inventory environment. Would easily do business with them again.
